New Delhi: India has welcomed the recently announced US-Iran ceasefire, expressing hope that it will lead to lasting peace in West Asia and restore stability to global trade and energy supply chains.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated India’s consistent call for dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation to end the conflict. The ministry noted that the prolonged hostilities have caused “immense suffering” and significantly disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. It also emphasized the importance of ensuring unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

The ceasefire follows an agreement between the United States and Iran, announced by US President Donald Trump, who said the truce would take effect if Iran ensured the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement came just before a US-imposed deadline.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran would halt defensive operations if attacks ceased. Reports indicate Iran has proposed conditions including lifting US sanctions, asserting control over the Strait, and the withdrawal of American forces from the region.
The conflict, triggered by airstrikes on Tehran 39 days ago, had escalated tensions and driven up global oil prices, raising energy security concerns for major importers like India.
