In a groundbreaking move aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and exploring new avenues for non-fare revenue, Indian Railways has installed its first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) onboard a running train. The trial run of the unique ‘ATM on Wheels’ initiative began on April 10 aboard the 12110 Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express in Maharashtra.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the ATM in operation on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the innovative step as part of Indian Railways’ ongoing modernization efforts under the ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 programme.

The ATM, fitted inside the train’s mini pantry space, has been securely installed with rubber pads and bolts to absorb vibrations and ensure safe functionality during transit. Indian Railways also confirmed that two fire extinguishers have been installed in the area as a precautionary measure.
The idea was first floated during a vendor consultation meeting held on March 25, where stakeholders explored unconventional ways to boost non-fare revenue. The Panchvati Express was selected for the pilot, with the mechanical team overseeing the transformation of its pantry car into a secure ATM kiosk.
