Industrialist Ratan Tata Passes Away At 86

Ratan Naval Tata, a visionary leader and industrial icon, passed away on October 9 at the age of 86. Ratan Tata played a transformative role in shaping the Tata Group into a global conglomerate and left an indelible mark on the nation’s industrial landscape.

The former chairman of Tata Sons, Tata’s legacy is defined not only by his transformational leadership of one of India’s oldest business conglomerates but also by his deep commitment to philanthropy and social welfare.

In an official statement, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the industrial titan. “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation,” Chandrasekaran said.

Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, belonged to one of the most illustrious business families in India, being the great-grandson of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group. After completing his education at Cornell University, where he earned a degree in architecture, he returned to India and soon became an integral part of the family business. He took over as the chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, a role that would define his legacy.

Taking the reins at a time when the group’s revenues stood at USD 5.8 billion, Ratan Tata spearheaded the company’s expansion into global markets. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew into a global powerhouse, with revenues reaching nearly USD 85 billion by the time he retired in 2011. He led key acquisitions, including the purchase of British brands Jaguar and Land Rover, and launched pioneering projects like the Tata Nano, the world’s most affordable car.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Ratan Tata on social media platform X, highlighting the industrialist’s immense contributions.

Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha expressed his condolences over the passing of Ratan Tata, emphasizing the profound impact Tata had on both the business world and philanthropy.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep sorrow, describing his death as a significant loss for the nation.

The impact of Tata’s leadership and values was also echoed by other industry leaders. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, expressed his grief, stating, “I am unable to accept the absence of Ratan Tata. India’s economy stands on the cusp of a historic leap forward. And Ratan’s life and work have had much to do with our being in this position.”

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, shared a touching tribute to Ratan Tata, reflecting on their last meeting together. He wrote, “My last meeting with Ratan Tata at Google, we talked about the progress of Waymo and his vision was inspiring to hear. He leaves an extraordinary business and philanthropic legacy and was instrumental in mentoring and developing the modern business leadership in India. He deeply cared about making India better.”

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, shared his heartfelt tribute following the death of Ratan Tata, acknowledging the profound influence Tata had on the nation.
