In a major milestone for India’s space and defence sectors, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday successfully launched CMS-03, the country’s heaviest communication satellite to date. Weighing around 4,410 kilograms, the satellite—also known as GSAT-7R—is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s secure communication and maritime surveillance capabilities across the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The satellite lifted off aboard ISRO’s LVM-3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, entering a geosynchronous transfer orbit shortly after launch.

CMS-03 Satellite
The CMS-03 satellite represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, GSAT-7 “Rukmini,” which has served as the Navy’s primary communications hub since 2013. The new satellite carries multi-band payloads operating in C, extended C, and Ku frequency bands—enabling high-speed, encrypted voice, data, and video links among warships, submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, and shore-based command centers.
Officials said the system is built to support network-centric warfare, improving fleet coordination, real-time situational awareness, and overall operational readiness. The advanced encryption and wider frequency range—including UHF and S-band support—will ensure seamless connectivity even in contested or remote waters.
With a footprint spanning the entire Indian subcontinent and large parts of the Indian Ocean, CMS-03 will serve as a key component of India’s Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) grid. The system allows for integrated threat tracking, coordinated responses, and uninterrupted communications across thousands of kilometers of sea.
Developed with several indigenous, state-of-the-art subsystems, the mission underscores India’s growing self-reliance in strategic satellite technology.
The successful launch of CMS-03 adds to ISRO’s growing track record of supporting India’s defence and strategic needs. The satellite will join a constellation of communication and reconnaissance systems that collectively strengthen India’s maritime and national security posture.
With the CMS-03 now in orbit, the Indian Navy gains its most advanced space-based communication platform yet, positioning India to better monitor and safeguard its maritime interests across the Indo-Pacific.
