In a significant development, the Congress and the National Conference (NC) have reached an agreement on seat-sharing for the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections. The deal was finalised just hours before the deadline for filing nominations for the first phase.
Under the terms of the agreement, the National Conference will contest 51 of the 90 Assembly seats, while the Congress will field candidates in 32 constituencies. Additionally, the coalition has decided to allocate one seat each to the CPI(M) and the Panthers Party, further broadening the alliance’s base. The pact also includes a “friendly but disciplined contest” on five seats.
The announcement was made by J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra, who emphasized the strategic importance of the alliance. He noted that the seat-sharing arrangement was the result of intensive negotiations, including last-minute discussions involving senior Congress leaders who were dispatched to Srinagar earlier in the day to finalize the deal.
