Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Minister of Chemicals & Fertilisers Jagat Prakash Nadda, along with Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, visited landslide-affected areas in Mon Town on Wednesday.
The delegation inspected the landslide-hit locations at Defence Colony and adjoining affected areas in Techa ward.
Nadda also interacted with families affected by the landslides at the Konyak Union Office in Mon. Expressing solidarity with the victims, he described the incident as “very disheartening and painful” and encouraged the affected families, saying they were not alone during this difficult time, with both the government and many others standing by them.
He said he had witnessed the situation and was aware of the challenges people were facing after the calamity. He assured that the Government of India would leave no stone unturned in providing support and restoring the affected areas. He also said a central team would visit to assist with relief efforts.
Nadda conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to the affected families. He acknowledged the efforts of the District Administration led by the Deputy Commissioner, the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong in operating emergency relief camps. He also appreciated the rescue teams led by the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, SDRF, civil society organisations and volunteers.
Deputy Commissioner Mon, Wennyei Konyak, briefed the Union Minister on the disaster situation, stating that incessant heavy rainfall had triggered floods and landslides across several parts of the district.
He said roads, bridges and public infrastructure had suffered extensive damage, while many villages experienced temporary disruption of road connectivity.
Heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides across Mon district, with Defence Colony and adjoining areas among the worst affected. Residential houses were damaged, several families were displaced, and road connectivity at multiple locations was disrupted.
Power and water supply were also temporarily affected in some areas. Relief camps and temporary shelters were established, and food grains, drinking water, medicines and other essential commodities are being distributed.
Konyak Union President Yamao Konyak thanked the Union Minister and his team for visiting the district, saying their visit conveyed that Mon was not alone during this difficult period.
Assistant Manager (Response & Communication), NSDMA and Nodal Officer (Disaster Management), DDMA Mon, Rendemo Shitio, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the monsoon damage in July 2026 and the post-disaster interim assessment of Mon district and Nagaland.
He said incessant monsoon rainfall on July 19-20, 2026, triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district, causing loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, severe agricultural losses and complete blockage of critical connectivity routes.
According to the presentation, the district recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, 2026, while cumulative rainfall from July 19 to July 31, 2026, reached 341 mm at the Automatic Weather Station located at Mon headquarters. Video footage showing the destruction caused by the floods and landslides was also presented by the Konyak Union media team.
