Hailing from Amravati in Maharashtra, Justice Gavai’s journey in the legal profession began in March 1985. He started his practice under Bar Raja S. Bhonsale, a noted Advocate General and former High Court judge. After working under Bhonsale for two years, Gavai began practicing independently at the Bombay High Court and later established his legal base at its Nagpur Bench.
Throughout his legal career, Justice Gavai built a reputation in constitutional and administrative law. He represented several municipal corporations and educational institutions in the Vidarbha region, including the Nagpur and Amravati civic bodies and Amravati University.
His legal acumen earned him several key appointments, including stints as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He later became the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the same bench in January 2000.
His judicial career took off in November 2003 when he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was confirmed as a permanent judge in 2005. Over the years, he presided over benches not only in Mumbai but also in Aurangabad, Panaji, and Nagpur, handling a broad spectrum of civil, criminal, and constitutional cases.
In May 2019, Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court, where he has served with distinction. As the senior-most judge after CJI Khanna, his elevation to the top post follows the convention of seniority observed in Supreme Court appointments.
