Justice must never take form of revenge: CJI SA Bobde

Date:

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Saturday said that justice cannot be instant and it must never ever take the form of revenge.

His comments came a day after the four accused in the brutal gang-rape and murder of a veterinarian were killed in an encounter by the Hyderabad police.

“I don’t think justice can ever be or ought to be instant. And justice must never ever take the form of revenge. I believe justice loses its character of justice if it becomes revenge,” Chief Justice Bobde said in his address at the inauguration of a new Rajasthan High Court building.

He also added: “Recent events in the country have sparked off the old debate with new vigour. There is no doubt that the criminal justice system must reconsider its position & attitude towards laxity and eventual time it takes to dispose of criminal matters.”

Justice Bobde, who took over as CJI last month, also said that increased application of technology and the strengthening of alternate dispute resolution systems could help cut down the time needed to take cases to their logical conclusion.

On the other hand, Telangana police have claimed that they killed the four accused because they snatched their weapons and opened fire on them while trying to escape. A petition seeking a probe into the alleged encounter has been filed in the Supreme Court.
