The political turmoil within the Trinamool Congress has intensified, with Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim seeking to step down from his post. According to sources, Hakim requested permission from party chief Mamata Banerjee to resign, and she has agreed to the request. However, no official announcement has been made so far.
Hakim’s move comes amid growing unrest within the party, as a significant group of legislators has openly supported expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and challenged the existing leadership structure.
In recent days, Hakim drew attention after attending Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s administrative review meeting at Nabanna. Several senior TMC leaders, including Nayana Bandyopadhyay, Ashok Deb and Kunal Ghosh, were also present at the meeting, fueling speculation about changing political alignments.
The latest development follows a major show of strength by dissident legislators. A group of 58 rebel MLAs formally backed Ritabrata Banerjee as the new leader of the legislature party and submitted letters of support to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose.
The rebel camp also proposed a new leadership team, with Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha and Shiuli Saha named as deputy leaders, while Akhruzzaman was proposed as chief whip.
