The ‘city of joy’, Kolkata has turned into a fortress as the Police made massive security arrangements for the protest march “Nabanna Abhijan”, anticipating violence during the protest in the city today. Nabanna is the state secretariat, from where the Government of West Bengal operates. It houses the offices of the Chief Minister and other top ministers and officials.

- Protesters moved police barricades as they staged a demonstration against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. In response, police used lathi charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
- This march to Nabanno has been organised by an unregistered group presenting itself as a student organisation to protest the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
- The students are demanding chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation due to the mishandling of the case related to the RG Kar incident, where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered while on duty.
- More than 6,000 policemen have been deployed to maintain law and order and 19 points have been identified for barricading. Around 26 Deputy Commissioners of Police will be posted at various check points.
- The barricading started at 8 am with major deployment of forces at places like Hastings, Furlong Gate, Strand Road and Kolkata’s twin city Howrah.
- The student have also announced that their march will not affect UGC-NET students as examinations would be held in two shifts.
