The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has revoked the membership of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This action follows a request from the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA).
This decision has come after the tragic incident on August 9, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital.
The IMA’s disciplinary committee, in a unanimous decision, chose to suspend Sandip Ghosh, who also held the position of vice president at the IMA Calcutta branch, from its membership.
In its communication to the IMA, FAIMA stated, “While we respect the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’, it is imperative that our organization upholds the highest standards of integrity and accountability, especially when a member is involved in such a serious legal matter.”
The doctors’ association further emphasized, “When a member of our community is implicated in such a grave offense, it is our responsibility to take appropriate action to preserve to preserve the dignity and moral standing of the medical profession.”
As part of the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted lie detection tests on Ghosh and several other individuals. The CBI has also launched a probe into alleged financial misconduct at the hospital.
The rape and murder took place in the early hours of August 9 when the doctor had gone to the seminar hall to rest during her night shift. The incident has ignited widespread protests across the nation.
