In another setback for the protesting junior doctors. The West Bengal government, on September 11, declined their demands for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s presence and a live broadcast as conditions for negotiations to end the month-long ‘cease work’ protest over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya expressed the government’s willingness to talk but suggested that the protest could be backed by “political forces”.
According to media reports, the training doctors refuted these claims, calling them unfounded, and vowed to continue their protests until their demands were met.
On September 9, the Supreme Court urged the doctors to return to work by 5 pm. on September 10, and no adverse action would be taken against them. However, the top court cautioned that if continuous abstention from work continued, then disciplinary action could be taken against them.
