Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has moved to the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court ruling that ordered a CBI investigation into his alleged financial irregularities.
The appeal will be heard on September 6 by a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. This move comes while Ghosh is under a tight radar following the incident where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the college’s seminar hall.
Earlier this week, a Kolkata court ordered Ghosh and three others to be held in CBI custody for eight days amid an investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The CBI had initially requested a 10-day detention, saying, “We have just arrested four people. There is a large nexus that needs to be exposed, and hence we are asking for their interrogation. We need their custody to unearth the entire nexus.”
The CBI’s First Information Report (FIR) against Ghosh includes charges under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy), Section 420 IPC (cheating and dishonesty), and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The CBI has been questioning Ghosh since August 16 about the intern’s tragic death and allegations of financial wrongdoing during his tenure.
