Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi on Tuesday accepted the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and his Council of Ministers following the verdict in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.
The Governor has asked Stalin to continue in a caretaker role until a new government is formed.
In a major political shift, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party, winning 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly, just short of the majority mark of 118. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 59 seats.
The results also delivered a significant upset in Kolathur, where Stalin lost to TVK candidate V. S. Babu by 8,795 votes.
Despite the setback, Stalin thanked voters, noting that the DMK-led alliance secured over 1.54 crore votes and describing each vote as a “token of trust.”
Meanwhile, alliance leaders including Thol. Thirumavalavan and Left party representatives are set to meet Stalin to discuss the next course of action.
