Police, National Disaster Response Force teams and other emergency personnel are carrying out rescue operations. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said heavy rainfall caused excavated debris from the tunnel project to slide down, blocking roads.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi called upon UDF workers “to provide all possible support while strictly following the administration’s guidelines”.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan chaired an emergency meeting and directed all agencies to coordinate rescue efforts. Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique have also been asked to reach Wayanad.

“There is an unfortunate disaster that happened during the construction of the tunnel in Wayanad district. There was an accident. Now, seven people are in the hospital. One person is reported dead, and seven persons are missing,” said Satheesan.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Wayanad and Kozhikode as extremely heavy rainfall continues.
