Boston: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has officially declared August 15 as “India Day” across the state to mark the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence and recognise the contributions of the Indian diaspora.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also issued a similar proclamation, coinciding with the opening of the new Consulate General of India in Boston.
The proclamations honour India’s journey as the world’s largest democracy and acknowledge the role of Indian-Americans in healthcare, technology, education, biotechnology, entrepreneurship and public service.
The Massachusetts government also recognised the efforts of community organisations, including the Foundation of Indian Americans–New England, for promoting cultural programmes, educational scholarships and civic engagement.
Mayor Michelle Wu highlighted the strengthening ties between Boston and India, noting the opening of the Indian Consulate and the visit of the Indian Navy’s training vessel INS Sudarshini during the Sail Boston 250 celebrations. Community events, including cultural performances, flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades, are planned across Massachusetts ahead of India’s Independence Day.
