New Delhi:Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan apologised to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on behalf of the company over the erroneous restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s social media post.
The apology came after Kaplan and other senior Meta executives met IT Secretary S Krishnan and senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in a meeting that lasted around 45 minutes.
Speaking after the meeting, Kaplan said, “I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post.” The meeting comes after Prime Minister Modi’s video, posted on July 23, was briefly removed from Facebook and Instagram before being restored.
Meta attributed the incident to a technical glitch and said the content had been removed “in error.” However, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology termed the company’s explanation “inadequate.” BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also criticised the incident, saying the parliamentary committee held Meta responsible and called for an apology from the company’s leadership. The meeting marks the first round of discussions between Meta and the Indian government over the issue.
