Sharing the announcement on X, Nadella said the investment will bolster India’s AI-first vision by building cutting-edge infrastructure, nurturing advanced digital skills and strengthening sovereign AI capabilities. He also thanked Prime Minister Modi for what he called an “inspiring conversation” on India’s growing opportunities in artificial intelligence.
The announcement follows Microsoft’s recent disclosure that it would invest $3 billion in India over the next two years to scale up cloud and AI infrastructure, including the development of new data centres. Nadella noted that India is “rapidly emerging as a leader in AI innovation,” opening up new possibilities across sectors and empowering organisations nationwide.
Microsoft currently operates three data centre regions in India, with a fourth scheduled to go live in 2026. The company said the fresh investments underscore its long-term partnership with India and its commitment to ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence reach people and businesses across the country.
