Incessant rains lashed Mumbai and the surrounding areas on Monday, causing chaos in the traffic and causing suburban train services and flights to be disrupted. An elderly woman died from burn injuries caused by a short circuit in the city, and people had to wade through waterlogged streets.
Certain parts of Mumbai received almost 300 mm of rain, flooding highways and low-lying regions.
Throughout the day, the city was battered by heavy rains, which made matters worse for the locals and forced schools to close. Mumbaikars can’t breathe a sigh of relief yet as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a’red’ alert for Mumbai, indicating heavy rainfall.
All schools and colleges have been shut due to heavy rain alert on Tuesday. As heavy rains have continued in Mumbai and around for over 24 hours now, the Kundalika River in Raigad and Kalu River in Thane are nearing their danger mark.
The University of Mumbai has postponed the Center for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) exams due to the intense rains that have been falling over Maharashtra. The Mumbai University CDOE exam, which was originally slated for July 9, will now take place on July 18.
