External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared a personal experience involving a hijacking incident from 1984, during a community event in Geneva on Friday. While responding to a question regarding the recently released series IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack, Jaishankar recounted how his own father, K Subrahmanyam, was a passenger on a hijacked Indian Airlines flight.
The flight was hijacked on July 5, 1984, had taken off from Pathankot and was eventually diverted to Dubai. After a tense 36-hour standoff, 12 pro-Khalistani hijackers surrendered, and all 68 passengers and six crew members were released unharmed. Recounting the situation, Jaishankar explained how he had initially contacted his mother to inform her about the hijacking, only to later discover that his father was on board the ill-fated flight.
EAM Jaishankar, who was a young officer in the Indian Foreign Service at the time, told the audience that he had a unique perspective during the hijacking – one as a government official tasked with handling the crisis, and the other as a family member anxiously awaiting news.
“It was interesting because, on the one hand, I was part of the team which was working on the hijacking. On the other hand, I was part of the family members who were pressing the government on the hijacking,” he said.
