Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the concerning increase in obesity rates in India, referring to a report that predicts nearly 44 crore people may become obese by 2050. He called this figure “huge and scary” and emphasized the urgent need for action to address this growing health challenge.
During his two-day visit to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth ₹2,587 crore. He also launched a food security saturation campaign in Surat.
While speaking at rallies in Silvassa, the administrative center of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and later in Surat, Modi pointed out obesity as a major cause of several health problems. He encouraged people to stay active and reduce their edible oil consumption by 10 percent to combat obesity.
“Lifestyle-related diseases are posing a significant health risk today, with obesity being one of the leading causes. A recent report predicts that nearly 44 crore people in India may be obese by 2050. This figure is huge and alarming,” said PM Modi.
He also warned that if the prediction proves correct, one in every three people in India could be affected by obesity by 2050. He urged everyone to take proactive steps to tackle this issue and protect public health.
