New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Rakesh Ranjan, alias Rocky, from Patna in connection with the NEET paper leak case. The arrest marks a significant advancement in the investigation, the central agency said on Thursday.

- Ranjan, believed to be a key player in the network, was taken into custody following a planned operation by the CBI.
- Ranjan has been sent to the CBI’s custody for 10 days. This development comes as the CBI continues its investigation, conducting raids at four locations, two near Patna in Bihar and two near Kolkata in West Bengal in connection with the case.
- Ranjan’s arrest is seen as a crucial step towards uncovering the full extent of the malpractice that has cast a shadow over the integrity of one of India’s most important entrance examinations, the agency said.
- The CBI’s investigation into the NEET paper leak case has led to the arrest of over a dozen suspects, each allegedly playing a role in the leak and distribution of the exam papers. The agency has been employing advanced investigative techniques to track down and apprehend those involved.
- The NEET-UG exam, held on May 5, 2024, has been mired in controversy, with allegations of cheating and impersonation. The NEET-UG, 2024 was held across 4,750 centres on May 5 and around 24 lakh candidates appeared in it.
- The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducted the exam, has faced severe criticism, leading to protests and legal actions. The Union Health Ministry has postponed the NEET-PG 2024 examination, with new dates to be announced soon.
- The government has replaced the chief of the NTA and formed a committee to review and improve its functioning.
