New Delhi: A sample of Nestle’s Low Fat Dairy Whitener collected from Bharat Hotels Ltd’s The Lalit in Connaught Place, New Delhi, has been declared “unsafe” and “substandard” following laboratory analysis conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
FSSAI Orders Sale to Stop
According to FSSAI, the Food Analyst’s report found the sample non-compliant under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The laboratory findings were shared with the food business operator, and a notice was issued to Bharat Hotels.
The operator has been given an opportunity to appeal the report within the prescribed period. Meanwhile, authorities directed it to immediately stop selling the identified product.
FSSAI’s public information did not specify which particular ingredient, contaminant or test parameter resulted in the “unsafe” classification.
Consumers have been advised to check official updates and verify affected product batches before purchasing or consuming them.
Nestle Disputes Safety Concern
Nestle India said the Low Fat Dairy Whitener is safe and complies with applicable regulations.
The company said phosphorus occurs naturally in milk and argued that the laboratory assessment of total phosphorus does not account for naturally occurring phosphorus in milk-based ingredients.
Nestle said its product meets prescribed limits for added phosphorus, including on an as-consumed basis, and that it is engaging with authorities through due process while sharing data from similar milk-based products.
The development follows recent FSSAI action involving three Nestle infant nutrition products over promotional claims and a separate Biotin-related finding.
