Nirbhaya case: SC dismisses Mukesh Singh’s petition against rejection of mercy plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the plea filed by one of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case — Mukesh Kumar Singh — challenging the rejection of his mercy petition by President Ram Nath Kovind.

SC said relevant records, the verdict of the trial court, HC and apex court in Nirbhaya case were placed by MHA before the petition went to President.

The court also said that alleged suffering in prison can’t be grounds o challenge the rejection of the mercy petition.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice R Banumathi and also comprising Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Ashok Bhushan heard the arguments in the matter on January 28.

Meanwhile, a curative petition was on Tuesday filed by another convict Akshay in the Supreme Court, said Tihar Jail officials.

Four people — Mukesh Kumar Singh, Pawan Kumar Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma, and Akshay Kumar Singh — are facing execution on February 1 in the matter.

The 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in south Delhi on the night of December 16, 2012, by six people including a juvenile.
