A tragic gas leak at a pharmaceutical laboratory in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district claimed one life and left 20 others hospitalised on Wednesday. The incident occurred at Tagoor Laboratories in the Parawada area, where toxic gas, believed to be a mix of hydrochloric acid and chlorine, escaped into the facility.
Initial reports suggest that a chemical reaction involving hydrochloric acid and chlorine resulted in the emission of hazardous gases. Workers present at the facility during the leak were the worst affected, with 11 of them collapsing on the spot and being rushed to nearby hospitals.
District Fire Officer P. Nageswara Rao confirmed the fatality, stating that one worker succumbed to the effects of gas inhalation during treatment. Emergency services, including fire and medical teams, acted swiftly to control the situation and evacuate the area. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the leak and assess whether safety protocols at the facility were adequate.
Former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep concern over the incident. He urged the state government to ensure adequate compensation for the bereaved family and proper medical care for those hospitalized.
