Over 100 Pakistani soldiers killed in Op Sindoor: Lt Gen Ghai

Date:

In a significant revelation, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai on Tuesday confirmed that more than 100 Pakistani soldiers were killed during Operation Sindoor, a large-scale military offensive launched by India in May this year to dismantle terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Lt Gen Ghai, who was serving as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during the three-day offensive, shared details of the covert yet decisive operation while speaking at a conclave of Army Chiefs from UN Troop Contributing Nations. Ghai noted that Pakistan’s unusually high number of posthumous military awards, announced on August 14, indirectly confirmed the heavy casualties exceeding 100 soldiers on their side.

Detailing the aerial component of the operation, Lt Gen Ghai revealed that the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted precision strikes on multiple Pakistani air bases on the nights of May 9 and 10, following repeated violations of Indian airspace by Pakistani drones despite prior communication between the two DGMOs.

He further disclosed that the IAF achieved “the world’s longest-ever ground-to-air kill at over 300 kilometres,” marking a new milestone in modern warfare. “Pakistani air assets were destroyed on the ground, including one C-130 transport aircraft, one Airborne Early Warning (AEW&C) system, and four to five fighter jets, some of which were hit in the air,” Ghai said.

Earlier this month, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh had confirmed that the precision strikes damaged or destroyed multiple high-value Pakistani aircraft, including F-16s and JF-17s, as well as a signals intelligence aircraft used for cross-border operations.

Lt Gen Ghai underscored that India’s response was both measured and inevitable, given Pakistan’s continued attempts to destabilize Jammu and Kashmir. He added that Pakistan opened cross-border fire after India’s precision engagements began, but Indian forces were well-prepared to contain any retaliatory action.

Reflecting on the broader context, Lt Gen Ghai highlighted the toll that decades of terrorism have taken on the region. “Since the 1990s, India has endured over 28,000 terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He noted that more than 100,000 people from minority communities were forced to flee their homes, accounting for the migration of over 60,000 families, while 15,000 civilians and over 3,000 security personnel have lost their lives to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
