Between May 7 and 10, Indian retaliatory counterstrikes led to the deaths of an estimated 35–40 Pakistani Army personnel, according to Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). These strikes came in response to a series of aggressive actions by Pakistan, including cross-border violations and drone attacks on Indian territory.
The retaliatory actions followed the launch of Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in a precision strike aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure.
Addressing a special media briefing on Sunday, Lt Gen Ghai outlined the objectives and outcomes of the operation. “Our aim on May 7 was to target terrorists and their infrastructure, not any other infrastructure—especially not Pakistani civilian or military establishments—and we achieved this with precision,” he said.
However, within hours of the Indian operation, Pakistan responded with a wave of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and small drones, targeting both civilian and military zones in India. “Three drones managed to breach our defenses and landed with minimal damage. Others were intercepted mid-air,” the DGMO stated.

The tensions continued to escalate overnight between May 8 and 9, with Pakistan reportedly flying both drones and aircraft across Indian airspace in a bid to strike military installations. “These were mostly unsuccessful,” said Lt Gen Ghai, adding that violations along the Line of Control (LoC) resumed, triggering intense and ongoing military exchanges.
Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, who also addressed the briefing, elaborated on the aerial dimension of the operation. He confirmed that the Indian Air Force conducted precise strikes on key Pakistani military bases and infrastructure along the Western Front, including Chaklala, Rafiqui, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha, Bhulari, and Jacobabad.
“Our goal was not body counts. It was to cripple terror infrastructure and send a firm message that Indian sovereignty is non-negotiable,” Bharti stated. He described the strikes as “coordinated and calibrated,” underscoring India’s intent to neutralize threats without escalating into full-scale conflict.
