India had an impressive show at the Paralympics 2024 on Monday after winning 8 medals in a single day at the ongoing event, including 2 gold medals by men’s javelin thrower Sumit Antil and shuttler Nitesh Kumar.
The highlight of the day was Sumit Antil competing with himself in javelin throw as he smashed his own Paralympic record of Tokyo edition twice with two simultaneous throws in Paris. As of now, world record and Paralympic record are both to his credit.
It was a spectacular show from the shuttlers as well as they won 5 medals on Monday. Kumar Nitesh clinched his first Paralympic gold in men’s singles SL3, while Suhas Yathiraj and Thulasimathi Murugesan bagged silver in SL4 and SU5 categories respectively. Young Manisha Ramadass added to the tally by winning a bronze in the women’s singles SU5, marking a historic feat for Indian para badminton.
Archery stars Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar won the bronze medal for India in the Mixed Team Compound event after defeating Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonnacina 156-155. It was also the first time that India had won a medal in archery at a Paralympic Games.
The 8 new medals took the Indian team into the top 20 with a total of 14 medals and the next target would be to improve the record of 19 medals achieved by the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics.
