Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said he is visiting Malaysia at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with a focus on strengthening defence, security and economic cooperation between the two countries.
In his departure statement, PM Modi described Anwar Ibrahim as a “friend” and said the visit would build on the strong momentum in bilateral ties. “I am embarking on an Official Visit to Malaysia at the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today,” the Prime Minister said.

Highlighting the growing partnership between the two nations, PM Modi noted that India–Malaysia relations have made steady progress in recent years. “The historic ties between India and Malaysia have seen steadfast progress in recent years. I look forward to my discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and further enhancing our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” his statement read.
The Prime Minister said the two sides would focus on expanding cooperation across several key areas. “We will aim to deepen our defence and security ties, enhance our economic and innovation partnership, and expand our collaboration into new domains,” he added.
PM Modi also underlined the importance of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, which he described as one of the largest Indian communities abroad. “I am also eager to meet the Indian community in Malaysia. Numbering nearly three million, they represent one of the largest Indian diasporas in the world,” he said. He further acknowledged their contribution to Malaysia’s development, stating that their role as a “living bridge” between the two nations provides a strong foundation for the historic friendship between India and Malaysia.
The visit will take place from February 7 to 8, during which PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this will be PM Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
India is also exploring opportunities to expand defence collaboration during the visit. The Ministry of External Affairs has said discussions may include the potential sale of Dornier aircraft, maintenance cooperation for Scorpene submarines, and support for SU-30 aircraft.
In addition to official engagements, the Prime Minister is scheduled to interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia as well as representatives from the business community.
