New Delhi: In a major setback for the Congress, Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as the Member of Parliament following a conviction.
This comes after the Surat District Court on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark made in 2019 during an election rally in Karnataka. He was later granted bail by the court.
Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark.
Rahul Gandhi was an MP from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala.
Rahul Gandhi had made the remark “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname” in April 2019, at a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka. The criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi had been filed by the BJP MLA from Surat West, Purnesh Modi.
