Railways withdraw proposed rule for imposing excess baggage charges

Date:

New Delhi: Indian Railways had planned to impose excess baggage charges for various categories if they breached the permissible limit. But that had to be withdrawn. The plan had to be shelved after a huge backlash from public and experts.

Citizens reacted very strongly rejecting the same on social media calling it a move to “penalise” travellers who use India’s lifeline as their mode of travel across the country.

Railways also clarified that there was an awareness drive that they were carrying out in the first week of June just to educate travellers.

“The whole idea was to create awareness among passengers to ensure no inconvenience was caused to others. The recent drive was being held during this peak summer season where footfall of passengers is really high,” a Railway spokesperson has been quoted as saying.

As per the rules being proposed the following was to be done:

  • Passengers travelling 1st class can carry up to 70kgs of luggage (without any additional charge)
  • AC 2 tier passengers can carry up to 50kgs of luggage (without any additional charge)
  • AC 3 tier, AC Chair Car & Sleeper car passengers can carry up to 40 kgs of luggage (without additional charge)
  • 2nd Class passengers can carry up to 35kg of luggage (without any additional charge)
