New Delhi: A powerful explosion in a car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, sparking a massive fire that engulfed multiple cars and sent shockwaves across one of Delhi’s busiest areas. Eight people were killed, and several others were injured in the incident.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as the blast shook nearby buildings and shattered windows. Thick plumes of smoke rose over the Red Fort area, drawing crowds as emergency services rushed to the spot.

“I saw the flames from my house and then came down to see what had happened. There was a loud explosion, my windows shook. I live nearby,” said Rajdhar Pandey, a local resident. “The blast was so strong that my windows rattled. When I came down, everything was on fire.”

Another witness described the aftermath as “horrific,” saying body parts were seen scattered on the road amid mangled vehicles. A nearby shopkeeper recounted, “I never heard such a loud explosion ever in my life. I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die.”

Seven fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames, which spread rapidly to three or four nearby vehicles parked in the vicinity. A team from the Delhi Police Special Cell has cordoned off the area and begun a detailed forensic examination to ascertain the cause of the explosion. Bomb disposal squads and forensic experts are also on-site, collecting samples and examining debris for explosive materials.
