The Supreme Court initially imposed a cost of ₹10 lakh on comedian Samay Raina, which was later reduced to ₹3 lakh, observing that he had allegedly made false statements before the court and failed to comply with its earlier directions in the India’s Got Latent case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice J.V. Mohana directed Raina to deposit the ₹3 lakh amount within two weeks, warning that coercive action would follow if he failed to comply. During the hearing, the bench remarked, “You have taken the court for a ride.”
The matter was heard along with petitions filed by content creators Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani and the Cure SMA Foundation.
Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh informed the court that Raina had not contacted the Cure SMA Foundation or people suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy despite earlier assurances.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also raised concerns over Raina’s conduct, alleging that one of his recent performances appeared to mock the ongoing legal proceedings.
Raina’s counsel told the court that the failure to contact the foundation was not due to ego and assured that efforts would be made to ensure compliance.
