A surprise meeting between NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reignited political speculation in the state, with the timing of the interaction drawing particular attention.
Pawar visited the Maharashtra legislature on Wednesday to attend a meeting of the high-powered committee on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute. After the meeting, he headed to Shinde’s office along with senior NCP (SP) leaders Jayant Patil, Jitendra Awhad and Shashikant Shinde.

At the time, Shinde was chairing a cabinet meeting. According to his office, the Deputy Chief Minister briefly stepped out to receive Pawar, welcoming the veteran leader with a shawl and bouquet. The two leaders reportedly spoke for around 15 minutes before Shinde returned to the cabinet meeting, while Pawar remained in the chamber to interact with party legislators.
Although Shinde’s office described the interaction as a courtesy visit, the meeting has sparked widespread political discussion as neither leader revealed what was discussed.
The development has attracted attention because Pawar chose to meet Shinde instead of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The meeting also comes at a politically sensitive time, with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi facing questions over its unity following the recent defection of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs to Shinde’s faction.
With no official details emerging from either side, the meeting has added to the ongoing political chatter surrounding Maharashtra’s evolving alliance equations.
