Sukhbir Singh Badal, 62, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, is fulfilling ‘sewadar’ duties after the Akal Takht imposed a ‘tankhah’ (religious penalty) on him and other Akali Dal leaders for their actions during the party’s rule in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. As part of his punishment, he has been assigned to serve as a ‘sewadar’, washing dishes and cleaning shoes at the Golden Temple and other gurdwaras.

Over the last two days, Mr. Badal has been stationed at the Golden Temple gate, holding a spear in one hand and dressed in a blue ‘sewadar’ uniform. With his leg in a cast, he sits in a wheelchair. The shooter has been identified as Narain Singh Chaura from Gurdaspur district, roughly 75 km away from Amritsar.
Harpal Singh, ADCP, Amritsar Rural, said, “We had deployed security nearby. During this time, an individual attempted to create a disturbance but was unsuccessful. The accused has been taken into custody. Only after interrogation will we know the motive behind his actions.”
