In a significant move to provide legal and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the ongoing unrest in Manipur, a delegation of six Supreme Court judges, led by Justice BR Gavai, will visit relief camps in the state on March 22.
The delegation, which includes Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotishwar, will oversee the launch of several legal and medical aid initiatives. Justice Gavai, who serves as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), will virtually inaugurate legal services camps, medical outreach programs, and new legal aid clinics in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul.
The legal services camps will play a crucial role in connecting displaced individuals with government welfare programs. These include access to healthcare, pensions, employment schemes, and assistance in recovering lost identity documents. To ensure effective implementation, state government departments will introduce at least five targeted welfare schemes designed to address the specific needs of the displaced population.

Medical support is also a key focus of the initiative. A team of 25 doctors from Chennai will conduct medical camps across all relief shelters in Manipur. Their services will extend beyond the initial visit, with six additional days of medical assistance planned to provide sustained healthcare, treatment, and essential medicines to those in need.
The Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA), in collaboration with NALSA, has been actively working to provide legal aid to affected communities. So far, 273 special legal aid clinics have been established in various relief camps, offering support in accessing government benefits, recovering lost documents, and securing medical aid.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, when a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) triggered violent clashes between the Hindu Meitei and tribal Kuki communities. The conflict has led to widespread displacement, with thousands seeking refuge in relief camps.
