Terrorists Open Fire At Police Officer In Srinagar

Date:

New Delhi: A police officer was shot by terrorists in Srinagar on Sunday. The officer has been taken to a hospital and the area has been cordoned off to track the attackers, police said.

Inspector Masroor Wani was participating in a cricket game with local boys at Eidgah ground when terrorists singled him out, as reported by officials. His condition was later declared critical after the attack.

An operation has been launched by the forces in response to the attack.

“Terrorists fired upon and injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this terror crime. Area cordoned off, case registered,” the Kashmir Zone Police wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

This comes just days after the biggest ceasefire violation along the international border earlier this week, subsequent to the understanding between India and Pakistan in February 2021. A Border Security Force (BSF) member sustained injuries in unprovoked firing and mortar shelling in the Arnia sector along the border on Thursday. Numerous villagers evacuated their residences after residential areas were struck by mortar shells.

Top officials from Jammu and Kashmir, in conjunction with security agencies, assembled at the 15 Corps headquarters in Srinagar on Wednesday.

The role of foreign terrorists in Kashmir was one of the big talking points at the meeting.

Official statistics disclose that among the 46 terrorists eliminated in Jammu and Kashmir this year, 37 were of Pakistani origin, marking a significant shift. For the first time in the 33-year history of terrorism in the Union Territory, the number of foreign terrorists killed surpasses local terrorists by fourfold, with only nine of them being locals.
