Thailand is set to reduce the visa-free stay for tourists from more than 60 countries, including India and the UAE, from 60 days to 30 days. The revised rule will come into effect on September 15, according to Thailand’s Foreign Ministry.
The move comes as authorities seek to prevent misuse of the country’s visa exemption system and tackle crimes linked to some foreign nationals. Officials have raised concerns over people allegedly using the rules to commit crimes, work without permission or run businesses without the required permits.
Thailand expanded its visa-free scheme in July 2024, allowing travellers from 93 countries and territories to remain in the country for up to 60 days without a visa.
Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow had said that reducing the permitted stay was part of government efforts to address abuse of the visa system.
Recent arrests have involved foreign nationals accused of offences including drug-related crimes and sex trafficking. Authorities have also taken action over foreigners allegedly operating businesses, including hotels and schools, without appropriate permits.
The change comes as Thailand continues to rely heavily on international tourism, while visitor numbers have already declined this year. The shorter visa-free period will affect travellers from dozens of countries from September 15.
