Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 has delivered a series of stunning upsets as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, marks a dramatic debut with multiple high-profile wins across the state.
In one of the biggest surprises, a TVK candidate and an auto driver, Vijay Dhamu, won the Royapuram seat in North Chennai, defeating heavyweight contenders including AIADMK veteran and former minister D. Jayakumar and DMK’s Subair Khan, son of former minister Rahman Khan. The result has been widely seen as a major political shock in northern Chennai.

TVK also registered another major victory in Mylapore, where Venkatramanan defeated BJP candidate and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, further strengthening the party’s urban presence.
In another landmark moment for the party, TVK opened its account in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with a win in Thanjavur. Candidate R. Vijaysaravanan secured 87,705 votes, defeating DMK’s S. Ramanathan (70,750 votes) and BJP’s K. Muruganantham (26,790 votes), marking TVK’s first-ever Assembly seat win.
However, the election also witnessed a major political jolt as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reportedly lost the Kolathur seat, sending shockwaves across the DMK camp.
The results triggered strong reactions from across the political and film spectrum. Actor Kajal Aggarwal congratulated Vijay, saying the verdict reflects the people’s belief in his vision and perseverance. She described it as a “spectacular and resounding victory” on social media platform X.
From neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, minister Nara Lokesh also congratulated Vijay, calling TVK’s performance a reflection of the “evolving aspirations” of Tamil Nadu’s electorate and wishing him success in public life.
With multiple shock wins and strong early performances, TVK’s debut has significantly reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, making the 2026 election one of the most unpredictable and closely watched contests in recent history.
