Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Honors Freedom Fighters on 81st Anniversary of ‘Quit India Movement’

Date:

On Friday, Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar honored the memory of freedom fighters on the 81st anniversary of the ‘Quit India Movement.’ This historic campaign against British rule began on August 9, 1942, following Mahatma Gandhi’s stirring “Do or die” speech delivered during the Bombay session of the Congress.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar urged members to reaffirm their dedication to the nation’s sovereignty and integrity. He encouraged them to dedicate themselves to serve India, and strive to fulfill the hopes of the people and to ensure the country’s esteemed place among nations.

Dhankhar stressed that the ‘Quit India’ movement’s message is as significant today as ever, describing it as a testament to what collective determination and dedication can achieve. He praised Gandhi’s “Do or Die” call which ultimately lead to India’s independence from colonial rule.

Furthermore, Dhankhar acknowledged the post-independence efforts to combat poverty, enhance literacy, eliminate discrimination, and promote social inclusivity. He said that the nation takes pride in the steady progress made in these areas.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to those who participated in the ‘Quit India Movement’ under Gandhi’s leadership. Modi highlighted the movement’s crucial role in India’s fight for independence, stating in a post on X, “Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu’s leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle.”
