Vice President, Naidu rejects Impeachment Motion against CJI Misra

In a move, that is being seen as a set back to the Congress, the Vice-President of India and chairman of Rajya Sabha, Venkaiah Naidu has rejected the  impeachment motion against the chief justice of India, Deepak Misra.

On April 20, the seven opposition parties led by Congress had moved the impeachment motion in the Rajya Sabha, seeking the removal of CJI under Article 217 read with article 124 (4) of the Constitution of India. The motion was signed by 64 sitting members of the House.

Naidu held consultations on the impeachment notice with constitutional and legal experts, according to a PTI report.

The Opposition parties had alleged that CJI Misra, who is set to retire on October 2, 2018, was assigning important cases to junior judges, ignoring senior Supreme Court judges. In the past, there have been over six attempts to impeach judges of constitutional courts but dissolved.
