Kolkata: BJP worker from Nimtha, Gopal Majumdar’s mother Shova Majumdar died on Monday morning. Shova Majumdar, an 85-year-old woman, was in the headlines in the first week of March after she claimed she and her son were assaulted by TMC members. According to reports, Shova and her son, Gopal Majumdar, were assaulted in the North Dumdum area. The incident triggered nationwide outrage, with even the National Commission for Women taking suo moto cognisance of it.
The state police rejected the claims Shova was assaulted and claimed her face was swollen owing to other ailments. Shova died on Monday morning, triggering a wave of condolence messages by BJP leaders. Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted:
‘Anguished over the demise of Bengal’s daughter Shova Majumdar ji, who was brutally beaten by TMC goons.
The pain & wounds of her family will haunt Mamata didi for long. Bengal will fight for a violence-free tomorrow, Bengal will fight for a safer state for our sisters & mothers’

Shah was taking a dig at the TMC’s slogan — Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaay — which literally means ‘Bengal wants none but its own daughter’. BJP is using the Shova Majumdar case as a poll plank in the elections in West Bengal. One would notice that the slogan refers to Mamata as Bengal’s daughter (meye) and not with the usual ‘Didi’. At the heart of this subtle change lies TMC’s effort to win the support of women voters.
I don't know how the sister has died. We don't support violence against women. Amit Shah tweets and says, "Bengal ka kya haal hai." What is the condition in UP? What is the condition in Hathras?: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram https://t.co/K6rfV7j7eN pic.twitter.com/rHSSU06jcU
