After the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, the main accused Sanjay Roy has been arrested. His arrest took place on Saturday following a swift investigation by a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), which had been formed just hours earlier.
Who is Sanjay Roy?
Roy began his tenure with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group in 2019 but later shifted to the Welfare Cell. He reportedly utilized his connections to secure a position at the 4th Battalion’s premises, which subsequently helped him to get posted at RG Kar Hospital. His frequent postings at the hospital, sometimes for extended periods, allowed him access to the hospital’s departments.
Roy’s Criminal History
According to the reports, Sanjay Roy was allegedly involved in a racket at the hospital, where he extorted money from patients’ relatives by promising to secure them a bed. If a bed was unavailable at the government hospital, he would charge extra fees to arrange one at a nearby nursing home.
Despite not being a police officer, Roy used his connections to stay in police barracks and often wore a Kolkata Police T-shirt, with a KP tag on his bike. His false authority led many volunteers to mistakenly believe he was an actual police officer.
Chaotic Personal Life
According to the reports, Roy had been married four times and struggled with marital issues due to his abusive behavior. Neighbors revealed that three of his wives left him because of his “misconduct,” while his fourth wife passed away from cancer last year. They also stated that Roy frequently returned home late at night, often intoxicated.
Confession without Remorse
Reports also say that during police interrogation, Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime without any sign of remorse. He told the police, “If you want, you can hang me.”
