In a major development, India and Pakistan have reached an understanding to halt all military actions and cross-border firing, days after tensions soared following India’s targeted strikes on terror camps under Operation Sindoor.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the breakthrough on Saturday, reiterating India’s unwavering stance against terrorism. “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he posted on social media platform X.

The ceasefire agreement was formalized after a direct conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations earlier in the day. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Pakistani DGMO reached out to his Indian counterpart at 3:35 p.m., proposing a cessation of all hostilities across land, air, and sea.
Both sides agreed that the ceasefire would take effect from 5:00 p.m. IST on Saturday. “Instructions have been issued to ground forces and units to comply with the agreement immediately. The DGMOs will reconvene for another round of talks on May 12 at 12:00 p.m. to assess the situation and take further decisions,” Misri said during a press brief.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the truce. “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dar wrote in a statement shared on X.
This comes in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, India’s strong military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead. On May 7, India struck nine terror infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, prompting retaliatory artillery and drone actions from the Pakistani side.
