In a dramatic turn of events, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has offered to resign from her position as the deadlock with agitating doctors continues over the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“I am ready to resign from the Chief Minister of West Bengal. I am not concerned about the post. I want justice, I am only concerned about justice getting served,” CM Banerjee said.
In her statement, CM Banerjee also expressed frustration over the standoff, recounting her patience and efforts to engage with the doctors over the past three days. “I tried my best to sit with the junior doctors. I waited 3 days for them that they should have come and settle their problem. Even when they didn’t accept the verdict of the Supreme Court, I waited 3 days with my highest officials, including Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DG and my MoS. I am sorry. I apologize to the people of this country and the world who are supporting them (doctors), please give your support.,” she said.

Efforts to resolve the deadlock faltered when the doctors demanded that any meeting with the Chief Minister be live-streamed.
CM Banerjee noted that due to the sub-judice nature of the RG Kar rape-murder case, the meeting with the doctors could not be live-streamed. The talks, which were scheduled for 5 pm, did not proceed as planned after the doctors refused to attend meeting without live-steaming.
Earlier, the West Bengal CM invited the protesting junior doctors for a meeting at the state secretariat to resolve the ongoing impasse over RG Kar issue after they refused to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive to resume work. The doctors, who have been on strike for nearly a month, are demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital.
