Winter Rush & Flight Chaos: Indian Railways Starts 89 Special Train Services

Date:

Amid an unexpected spike in passenger load and ongoing flight disruptions across the country, Indian Railways has rolled out 89 special train services, offering over 100 additional trips across various zones.

These services began on Dec 6 and will continue for the next three days, the Ministry of Railways announced on Saturday.

According to the ministry’s statement, the move is aimed at managing the winter travel rush and ensuring passengers have sufficient alternatives as demand for rail travel rises. The additional trains, the ministry said, “will help support smooth travel and ensure adequate connectivity amid rising demand for rail travel.”

The decision comes at a time when air travel has been severely affected nationwide. IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest carrier, has cancelled flights for five days in a row, leaving thousands of travellers scrambling for options. The airline cited multiple reasons for the disruptions, including new Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) norms, minor technical issues, and adverse weather conditions.

The government’s intervention through special train operations is expected to ease pressure on the transportation network, offering relief to passengers affected by the ongoing flight cancellations.
