Yamuna Expressway Accident: 7 Buses, 3 Cars Collide In Mathura

Date:

At least 13 people were killed and several others injured after a major multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura early Tuesday morning. The accident involved seven buses and three cars and was triggered by extremely poor visibility caused by dense fog, officials said.

The crash led to chaos on the expressway, with multiple vehicles catching fire following the collision, prompting panic among passengers.

Vehicles Catch Fire as Visibility Drops Sharply

According to police, the accident occurred due to near-zero visibility conditions, resulting in a chain collision. Several vehicles burst into flames after the impact, complicating rescue operations at the site.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar confirmed the details earlier in the day and said emergency services were rushed to the scene immediately.

Police Confirm Deaths, Injuries and Rescue Operations

Speaking to reporters, SSP Shlok Kumar said, “At least four people were killed, and 25 others were injured in a major road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura this Tuesday morning. The collision, involving seven buses and three cars, occurred due to dense fog.”

He added that visibility remained poor even hours after the incident. “As you can observe, it is still foggy here. This poor visibility is what caused approximately seven buses and three small cars to collide with each other. The accident also resulted in the cars catching fire.”

Emergency Response Mobilised, Highway Clearing Underway

Detailing the rescue efforts, the SSP said fire services, police teams and district administration officials were deployed without delay.

“As soon as the news reached us, teams from our fire service, local police, and local administration were immediately dispatched to the scene. According to the information we have, the search and rescue operation is now nearly complete. So far, we can confirm that four people have died.”

He further stated, “Approximately 25 people have been admitted to the hospital for treatment; however, none of them are seriously injured. They are currently receiving the necessary medical care. Additionally, we are arranging for the remaining people present here to be transported to their homes via government vehicles.”

District Magistrate Calls Incident ‘Very Unfortunate’

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh termed the incident “very unfortunate” and said the focus remained on relief work and medical care.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. We have recovered the bodies of the four people who were killed in the accident. More than 12 fire tenders and over 14 ambulances were deployed immediately. The injured have been sent to C.H.C. Baldev and the District Hospital. We can confirm that none of them are seriously injured, and they are all reported to be out of danger,” Singh told reporters.

He added that survivors were being transported safely and relief efforts were continuing smoothly.

“As one can see, there is heavy fog and low visibility here. The cause of the accident will be investigated later; for now, our primary focus is on the relief operations.”

CM Yogi Expresses Grief, Orders Best Treatment for Injured

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident.

In a post on X, he wrote,“The loss of lives in the road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district is extremely tragic and heart-rending. My condolences are with the bereaved families. Instructions have been given to the district administration officials for the proper treatment of the injured. I pray to Lord Shri Ram that he grants place at his divine feet to the departed souls and bestows swift recovery to the injured.”

Fog-Related Accidents Raise Safety Concerns

The Mathura accident came just a day after another deadly fog-related pile-up on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway. That incident involved nearly 20 vehicles and occurred around 5:00 am on Monday, killing four people — including two police personnel — and injuring 15 to 20 others.

Both accidents have highlighted growing concerns over road safety during winter fog conditions across northern India.
