Fact Check: 2013 Image from Kenya Falsely Linked to Namibian Cheetahs in Kuno National Park

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed eight cheetahs in the Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh on September 17, 2022.

In the above context, a picture is being shared on social media, claiming that the Namibian cheetahs feasting on a deer. The posts used hashtags like #SaveDeer and #KunoNationalPark, indicating that they are referring to the Namibian cheetahs recently released in Kuno National Park.

The post was shared with a caption: (English translation: I humbly request you great people of the Bishnoi society, there is still time to unite. Congress should try to save the Chital deer who has been taken to Kuno National Park by giving up the politics of BJP. Blind devotees, please stay away from the post, take off the glasses of devotion and come along with society. If you can’t come along, please don’t try to suppress the truth on social media.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search, we found that the picture had been clicked by Alison Buttigieg in 2013, in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

On her website, Alison wrote: “Narasha, the cheetah mom, was teaching her youngsters how to kill prey. However, they were a bit slow on the uptake as they were playing with the hapless Impala prey instead of killing it. Narasha is grabbing the impala by neck in all photos.” Alison shared some pictures of the hunt on her website.

NewsMobile fact-checked the same image in 2020 when it was shared with a claim that to save her children, an ‘Impala’ sacrificed herself to cheetahs.

https://newsmobile.in/articles/2020/02/27/mother-impala-sacrificed-herself-to-cheetahs-to-save-her-kids-heres-the-truth/

Hence, it is clear that the picture was taken in 2013 in Kenya, and is not related to Namibian cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh.
