Fact Check: 2014 Image Of Russia’s Humanitarian Convoy To Ukraine Falsely Linked To Ongoing Israel-Hamas War

Date:

Amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Egypt recently discussed plans with the US and other countries to provide humanitarian aid through its border with Gaza Strip. The country refused to build safe corridors for refugees fleeing the enclave.

Against this backdrop, an image of a convoy of multiple trucks on a highway is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the image claiming the Egyptian president ordered a huge humanitarian convoy to Gaza.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption:

⚡️🇪🇬 In direct action against Israel, the Egyptian President orders a huge humanitarian convoy to Gaza, even after Israel has bombed the Rafah crossing.

The Crossing will open when the convoy will arrive.

We will see if Israel really bombs the aid convoy, as they promised.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral image, the NM team traced a report in The Guardian, dated August 14, 2014,and titled: Russian convoy stops close to Ukraine border. The image in the report matches with the viral picture informing that a group of 280 trucks was carrying humanitarian aid from Russia to Ukraine.

The convoy was stopped close to the border with eastern Ukraine, as Ukraine said it would not allow the trucks, escorted by Russian soldiers to enter its territories.

Also, a YouTube video on the official channel of CNN, dated August 14, 2014, and titled: Ukraine suspicious of Russian convoy, confirms that the convoy was sent by Russia to Ukraine, but was rejected by the latter over suspicion that it might be a Trojan horse-style military invasion.

We could not find any news related to Egypt sending humanitarian aid to Gaza as of now. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show the humanitarian convoy ordered by the Egyptian president to Gaza, is fabricated
