Fact Check: 2015 Video Of Indo-Pak Soldiers Exchanging Sweets Falsely Linked To Diwali Celebration

Date:

A video showing two soldiers shaking hands is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim that it shows soldiers from India and Pakistan are celebrating Diwali. It is also claimed that politicians and terrorists have ruined the relations between the two countries.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

भारत पाकिस्तान बोर्डर पर दिवाली की मिठाई का आपस में लेना देना, ये दर्शाता है कि सारा गलत खेल केवल अंध भक्त और नेताओं का है, और कुछ आतंकियों का है, (English version: Diwali sweets on India-Pakistan border, shows that all wrong game is only of blind devotees, leaders, and some terrorists.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found the claims to be false.

Running the Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, the NM team identified an X post by news agency ANI, dated January 26, 2015, with a description: “Kaman Setu, Uri (J&K): Sweets exchange ceremony between Indian & Pak Army on the occasion of 66th Republic Day.”

Searching further on Google, we found an Economic Times report, dated January 26, 2015, describing that “Indian and Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) today exchanged sweets at three places in Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of Republic Day.”

According to the report, “A unit of 12 Infantry Brigade of the Army exchanged sweets with their Pakistani counterparts at Kaman Post in Uri sector on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road, defense sources said. Sweets were also exchanged with Pakistani troops at Teetwal in Tangdhar sector of Kashmir and at Chakan-da-Bagh in Poonch Sector of Jammu region.”

Another video report by Headlines Today, dated January 2015, shows clips from the viral footage, titled “R-Day: Indian soldiers greet Pak counterparts with sweets,” clarifying that it dates back to Republic Day, not Diwali.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show soldiers from India and Pakistan celebrating Diwali, is false.
